So happy with this guy. He is my fifth doll from the beginner doll class, which I love love love. For the jacket I just used the shirt pattern and winged it. I used weft for the hair and it came out ok. It is harder to get good results with short hair. My grandson has a very short cut and he wants hair like his but this was as short as I dared.

Unlike a class that takes place over a weekend or a few weeks, this class is available to you for an entire year. Calmly watch your lessons, take notes, ask many questions. Most students make several dolls in their enrolment period and they come out confident that they can do it on their own now.

I wanted to make a doll for my 3 year old
And I discovered dollmaking
Back in 2008 I had an important birthday coming up, and for unknown reasons to me, I felt the urge to make a doll for my daughter.
I didn't know how to use a sewing machine, I didn't even know how to make a simple rag doll. Yet, I was determined.
I wanted a doll made with natural materials, not a hard plastic doll, so I could rest easy knowing there weren't any harsh chemicals or bad things in my little girls toys, especially if they decided to bring them to bed with.
I used whatever materials I could find in my local fabric store and thrift stores, and sadly that doll did not survive to play.
From then on I was on a mission, to learn dollmaking and to make beautiful and sturdy dolls, not just for my children, but for other kids out there. This is how Fig & Me was born in October of 2008.
I was very sad that I had no one to ask questions, and found it incredibly difficult to find information even on the materials. This was pre-Instagram and Pinterest; Facebook 'groups' weren't even invented yet.
I would have loved to have exactly this class to guide me. With videos I could watch when my little ones were tucked in for the night.
With a handy list of everything I needed and where to buy it, instead of figuring it out all on my own.
With ample room to ask questions, see if I was moving in the right direction and then find suitable clothing tutorials made to fit and dress my dolls.
I've created this class for people like me, 18 years ago. For busy parents that are juggling work, day-to-day child minding...but with the inner need to be creative.
Dollmaking opened a vast world for me and I have the inkling it can do the same for you.
Once you make your first doll, you are more likely to make a second one...and a third...and so on.

What size is the doll and is this suitable for children to play with?
You will make a doll 14" (36 cm) tall that is suitable for children 4+ (due to the long mohair that can get tangled in their little fingers). I can give you suggestions on how to make this as a safer doll for a slightly younger child.

Is the class self-paced or do you release it slowly over time?
You have access to all the content as soon as you enroll. You can then work on your lessons as your time and schedule allows.

Is the class in English?
Yes, all content is in English.

How long do I have access to the class?
You will have access to your class content for a year. This should allow you plenty of time to make one or more dolls, go over the content a few times so you learn it well and make variations so you can nurture your creativity with wool and fabric.

Do I learn how to make doll clothes in this class?
Not included in this class, but I have a dressmaking course that will teach you to make clothing for this doll: starting with undergarments (undies, socks and an undershirt), bunny overalls, flannel pyjamas, a tiered dress, a summer outfit of top and shorts, a ruffled pinafore, a quilted jacket, ruffle boots, pants and shirt. Can I ask you questions as I make this doll or am I on my own?
You can work on your doll at your own pace and any time you need help I am here to guide you and give you feedback. You can easily ask questions in each lesson and I reply to you there. You are also welcome to email me directly.

Do I get a list of ingredients and where to buy them?
There is a very detailed list of all ingredients, tools and supplies you will need to create the doll, as well as a directory of online suppliers so you can purchase anything you need.

Can I make dolls for sale from this class?
No. This class and all its content, including the doll pattern, is for private use only. No commercial sales nor distribution of any of its content. If you have been greatly bitten by the dollmaking bug and would like to design your own pattern to sell from, I can work with you one-on-one through online tutoring sessions, so you come out with a design all your own.
