It will explain to you how to create a high-quality sculpted face that will retain its shape over many years, why and where to put all the facial features, layer by layer, and how to then sculpt it over the skin fabric.
You will learn why some faces look much older on your dolls, and how to achieve the young and adorable look of a doll that resembles a little child.

How I Discovered Sculpting
And realized adding expression brought much joy to my doll making
I started creating Waldor-inspired dolls back in 2008, as I wanted to make a doll for my daughter, who was about to turn 3-years-old.
By their nature, Waldorf dolls are not supposed to portray emotion at all. They need a blank face, so that the child can mirror their emotions through the doll. As anything you add, the child doesn't need to imagine anymore.
As my doll making progressed and evolved, I discovered needle felting and the options presented themselves: adding lips, more shape to the nose, rounder cheeks, etc.
All of this allowed me to create dolls with more detail and more expression, moving my work out of the realm of Waldorf-inspired dolls into more of a fiber art doll journey.
And while I still adore the simple, un-sculpted doll faces, my passion now truly lies in creating one-of-a-kind dolls, with very unique faces, that have so much emotion to convey.
This is only possible by adding detail, and sculpting doll faces with needle felting techniques can get you there.
I would have loved to have a course to explain the proportions, the different techniques when handling the needles, how much wool to add and how to make areas firm and smooth. I had to learn it all by myself though many trials and untold errors.
But you don't have to. You can now learn with me, as I guide you into how to build a beautiful face. Leaving you enough room to add your own charm, ideas and to then take the techniques and evolve your own dolls.
It's one of the best adventures I've ever embarked on.

Unlike a class that takes place over a weekend or a few weeks, this class is available to you for an entire year. Calmly watch your lessons, take notes, ask many questions. Most students make several doll heads during their enrolment period and they come out confident that they can do it on their own now.

Is this class suitable for a beginner?
If you have never made a doll ever, this is probably not the best class to start with as you won't have guidance to continue making your doll. I recommend to begin with one of my doll e-books if this is your case. But other than that, it is the perfect class for dollmaking beginners in the natural fiber art doll realm.

How long do I have access to the class?

Will I receive feedback from you regarding my progress?
You are welcome to ask any and all questions in each lesson, as you go through them. You can also email me and send me photos of your progress so I can better support your learning journey.

What do you learn in this class?
You will learn to roll a firm head, build a neck, how to sculpt all the facial features: jaw, chin, cheeks, nose and lips using needle felting. Then you will learn how to to sew a skin cover to reveal your doll features. The class does not cover eye embroidery or include a body pattern, but I give you tips on how to adapt the head to some of my existing doll patterns in the pdf included in the Welcome post.
